France's Vieira eyes fourth World Cup appearance

Tuesday 2nd February 2010

Patrick Vieira is refusing to consider a non-appearance for France in the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, despite being 33 years of age - and set to celebrate a further birthday during the tournament itself. "I really can't imagine not being at the World Cup," he tells FIFA. His form at Manchester City in the run-up to the World Cup could be a crucial deciding factor, as Vieira's performance for Roberto Mancini's side may be prominent in the mind of France's Raymond Domenech when choosing his squad. FIFA reports that, while Vieira has lost a couple of one-on-ones since his start for Manchester City, Mancini is looking ahead to when the player hits top form. "When he has regained the match fitness required at this level, I see him becoming a key player," Mancini previously said. With or without Vieira, France are favourites to win their group outright, at 11/10 against opponents including Mexico, Uruguay and hosts South Africa. But with the Senegal-born midfielder looking to start in his first World Cup to be held in Africa, FIFA suggests that an appearance in the tournament would add a touch of symmetry to his career.
